Two of Mexico's most prolific mining districts, the Taviche and San Jose Mining districts (the district), are located in the central portion of the State of Oaxaca in southern Mexico, a one hour drive from Oaxaca City. The district, formerly the Taviche Mineral Reserve, is well known for high grade narrow vein epithermal deposits and was one of the most prolific mining areas in Mexico for silver and gold during the late 1800's and early 1900's. During its peak, the region saw over 50 small tonnage mines in operation. Historic information available for the area is sourced from family held production records and from the Servicio Geológico Mexicano , the Mexican Geological Survey (the "SGM"). The SGM completed a compilation and evaluation on many of Mexico's past producing mines during the 1980's and 1990's after the government nationalized Mexico's historic mining districts into mineral reserves.
